Indigearte de Abya Yala is a piloting internal art component under MEChA de UCLA. We are a collective that focuses on bringing art to our space for the enrichment of our organization and community through edutainment and ARTivism. Vision: Art as resistance, art as empowerment, and art as healing.
Mission: Indigearte de Abya Yala uses the arts as a cultural, social, and political tool for the means of self-expression and self-determination. We aim to protect and solidify the identity of our peoples that has been historically marginalized, and seek to direct our vision towards establishing a safe, creative space against institutional oppression and our constant struggle for power of our own individual bodies and communities as a whole. Guided through the spiritual, cultural, and political grounding in Xicanism@, we adhere to the values of a non-hierarchical and egalitarian cultural, social, and political structure.
Abya Yala in the Kuna language means “land in its full maturity” and refers to the “American” continent in its totality. By renaming the continent in an original and Indigenous language, we are taking the first step toward an epistemic shift towards decolonization and the establishment of Indigenous peoples’ autonomy and self-determination.
